Mercedes G-klasse
Who is looking for a badass 4×4 to the Mercedes G-Class. The G-Class came after a considerable development in 1979 on the market.

In the first instance as a vehicle intended for offroadgebruik and the army, but after a few years decided Mercedes G-Class (still a G-Wagen) is also of luxury features that are normally only on street-legal car’s occurred. This you could say that Mercedes is one of the first SUVS in the hands.

The G-Class is already over 35 years in the market, where the basic shape is actually always is preserved. He is popular with specific target groups (dozens of countries have the car in front of their armies purchased for example) but also to consumers. The G-Class has a true cult status achieved. There are a number of variations, including versions with short and long wheelbase, open and closed the trunk, one or more rows of seats, convertibles, etc. Furthermore, there are diesels and benzineversies, with the most desirable versions of the sweets of huistuner AMG.

Issues

  • Check carefully what you buy, there are many owners that their G-Class have been updated to be more modern to look like. Sometimes this goes even so far as modern car bodies and/or engines have been transferred to old ladderframes.
  • Rust, rust, rust. Check in particular the body panels, the doors and door hinges, the door sills, the crossbars at the bottom of the body, but also the chassis and the connections between body and chassis for rust.
  • The 300D with engine code OM616 or OM617 has sometimes a bad compression, which makes starting in cold weather could be problematic. The rear krukasafdichting is also a weak point in this block. The OM603 300D is a lot better.
  • The engines are also pretty bulletproof, but check for leaks, and deposition on the inside of the oil – and koelvloeistofdop which may indicate expensive repairs like leaky head gaskets.
  • Check the locks of the various differentials. If this does not work properly (something which is particularly prevalent if it for a long time not used), you can but at a repair of several thousand euros].
  • There may be clearance on the cardanassen arise. This is often to recognize the vibration / shaking during the drive. One new drive shaft costs just 700 euros, a G-Class has three. Also the universal joints are susceptible to clearance. This is palpable and audible when you hit them with the hand, try to move.
  • The springs that break, especially at the back, and the first or the last winding. If the car sit or lean on a broken spring most likely the cause.
  • Check that the brakes work well, the disks on the front would still go to warp, to recognize vibration during braking.
  • Wheel bearings and fuseelagers are also sensitive, make smooth, tight turns and note that ticking / rattling sounds from the wheels.
  • The ball joints of the steering rods may not play.
