Audi RS5 TDI Concept maakt gebruik van 48V
A 48-Volt system is needed because the 12 Volt is just not enough for the latest electrical techniques. But how should I do that with your phone charger and navigation system?

With Audi, they are engaged in the development of systems that are more power than a 12 Volt electrical system can deliver. The solution for this electrical problem looking for Audi now in a 48-Volt system that more power can be delivered thanks to a small electric compressor that is separate from the internal combustion engine works. Audi has this technique been applied in prototypes of the A6 TDI and RS5 TDI Concept and is expected the technique within a year or two in production models to introduce.

Because more and more technology in cars is electrified, the current 12V circuits in cars are still taxed more. This would be with a 48V system would be resolved and it gives Audi the ability to such things as electrically driven pumps and power steering better. Also, thanks to the higher power used to create thinner cables, so less energy is lost and the saved weight can be, for example, cable harnesses. The system works with a 48V lithium-ion battery, which in combination with an optimized generator of about 10kW power supply.

Audi expects a savings of up to 10 grams of CO2 emissions per kilometre to be able to achieve with this system, which is approximately equivalent to a saving of 0.4 litres of fuel per hundred kilometers. But what about all the peripherals which we now use 12V sockets in the car prick? Lights that will all through? For the time being not. Audi enters the system in the first instance, in combination with a regular 12V system. Thanks to a clever adapter to the 12V network, if necessary, energy from the 48V network. So you don’t have (yet?) no new charger for you phone to buy.
