The matter of issues
That Porsche with every iteration of the 911 again, a better car on the road, that part of the story we know now. There is also going not to with this facelift that Porsche intimates will indicate with 991.2. The big news is under the hood and it is as big a step as in the nineties, when the 996 with a water-cooled boxer engine the last air-cooled 993 afloste. The facelift of the 991 reads as follows the end of the atmospheric block, now even the “entry level” Carrera a six-cylinder boxer engine with two turbos. This no doubt to the horror of purists, that their dream sports car, preferably with the following ingredients: rear-wheel drive, with manual gearbox and with atmospheric engine.

That the 911 Carrera (S) turbo’s, is a thing. However, most customers will probably only make you happy, that they are, after all, also has become of all-wheel drive (partly because of the wider hips) and automatic transmission. A Porsche 911 with manual gearbox is in Europe already a rarity, most customers order one with the automatic PDK gearbox.

Traditionally turbo engines three potential disadvantages compared to their atmospheric brothers: the sound is the turbo in the exhaust path is muted, the gas response is less direct and turbo engines generally run out of the less like high revs.

With that last to start with; we can deliver something in. The previous Carrera S fetched more than 8,000 rpm, the new Carrera S has the redline at 7500 rpm, but achieves that without a murmur. I couldn’t shed a tear to leave it, because the turbo-Carrera has 60 Nm of extra torque which is also very early is available from 1.700 rpm.

Complaints about the throttle response, I neither, after all, we live no longer in the eighties, where the giant turbo-holes made it necessary to create an advanced planning to make when you the exact gas could give. Floor the pedal and the 991.2 speert off.

The new soundtrack
The issue of sound is also interesting, it is certainly changed. You can listen to how the 911 blocks over the years have sounded, there are two things. First, there is always a type of characteristic six-cylinder boxer engine sound, the second sound they are all different. For those who don’t believe this, I refer back to our mini-docu with all generations of 911 RS.

The new Carrera (S) definitely sounds not like the 911 Turbo, but has a character of its own. The hissing and blow off of the turbo is completely new and makes the concert what the zescilinders play interesting. Instinctively, the sound volume has reduced slightly, but according to the meter vibration that is not so.

The least quick facelift 911 is the Carrera cabriolet with manual gearbox, which is about 60 kg heavier than the coupe, and the sprint to 100 in 4,8 seconds. The sprint to the 200 comes in at 16.6 seconds. Your Porsche dealer recommends that’s why we like both Sport Plus and the PDK bin.

With slipping clutch
Say wut: the PDK box has two links and thus makes the Porsche extremely clever use of. Both links to use and to slip(!) there may be two gears at the same time be used. Since the wet links that a bath of oil to do their work, claims Porsche, that this wear can take place.

Exterior changes
Grab your magnifying glass, we’re going to find. The differences are easiest to spot on the back which is a black air intake with vertical louvres. In the bumper sit on the side in addition, holes for the turbos, because there is a vacuum and the air can thus easier escape.

To the front there is a new front bumper with vertical rib which deflects and thus on a wing of an airplane looks like, if you have a lot of imagination or in the PR department of Porsche work. The daytime running lights now have four points like Cayenne and Panamera.

Active aerodynamics
The enlarged air holes in the front bumper with three louvres will be closed from 15 km/h. As the need for more cooling, then open them again. If not, then they go from 160 km/h in different stages open, except if the roof of the convertible, or the sunroof is open, in this case, open them all from 120 km/h. The technical details for you to feast on and makes a substantial difference in air resistance and lift on the front axle.

The deployable rear spoiler are all generations on the 911, but because of the advent of the turbo block also had to be there quite a bit of thinking to be done. The spoiler is variable and adjustable, the “angle of attack” is, among other things, the need of air for the intercoolers. In addition, there is interplay with the louvres at the front, the amount of lift increases when these are open, and so must also take account of the actuation of the rear spoiler to make the car more stable. The are almost fly-by-wire technologies where modern fighter aircraft are equipped. May Porsche the concerned engineer a few months to miss to the impending JSF debacle deadlock, the group has, after all, what is good to do in the US.

Drive, brake and steer
In this regard the 911 again better. Grip and traction (on dry) simply fantastic, the average driver takes rather than the paste rubber of the 911. For the real hooligans would be a disadvantage may be that there is so much grip, because a driftje bet seems further away than ever. Fortunately, there is much for it, because the feel is better than it was at the start of 991.2.

I drove a Carrera S with the optional achterwielbesturing. That was already available on the 911 Turbo (S), but is now also available for the base models. It works great, when turning you can feel the back clear along and thanks to the superb grip you can also really early and hard acceleration.

Also about the brakes, nothing but praise, itself during schofterig hard downhills kept the brake pedal twice very hard. This is how it should be in a car with this snelheidspotentie.

Buttons, beads and mirrors
Also, the 911 gets even more active safety systems, that you continue in the folder should study. Also the navigation system is refreshed with online features and Apple Carplay. The funniest button is now on the steering wheel. Just like the 918 Spyder, you can the different drive modes, there choose and for 911’s with PDK bake, there is a magic button. The Sports response button as a butler the 911 for 20 seconds in maximum attack mode, rete-useful to any small hole to use to overtake.

Conclusion
With turbo’s even more fun. Something else I can’t make. Porsche has outdone themselves with this seemingly “simple” facelift of the 911. Movie!
