In the context of ‘in the past everything was better’ was decided by the Brit David Brown Aston Martin’s iconic DB5 to be reincarnated until its Speedback GT. Classic Aston looks, but with a gloedjenieuwe Jaguar V8 under the hood.
David Brown. Does that name ring a bell? It is the name of the man who, in 1947, Aston Martin took over and also the man that his initials are lent to the now classic Astons. And yet, the David Brown behind the Speedback GT is not the same as the guy that Aston Martin DB gave. Coincidence.
The Speedback GT is a hand built prototype of aluminium, based on a Jaguar XKR. The idea behind the design? “Delivering a vision of a classic-looking sports car without compromising modern convenience and features.”
Well, that is successful. Because a blind man can see that mr Brown, its design has greatly derived from the type of Aston that James Bond in Goldfinger as good on mountain roads to bounce back, the DB5. The line, the headlights, taillights, bumpers, hood, grille. In short, everything. To the spoked wheels.
The powertrain of this concept is anything but classic. There houses, namely the supercharged 5.0-litre V8 from the Jaguar XKR. Completely standard, and therefore good for 510 hp and thanks to a nearly identical curb weight, a 0-100 sprint in 4.6 counting. Also the chassis and spring set is standard XKR, so expect David Brown Automotive is a roughly equal driving experience.
What an XKR with handmade DB5-swag your cost? Well, close to three tonnes. Still cheaper than an original DB5. Nice product, but not as geslaags as the glorious Eagle Low Drag.
