Scientists have previously concluded that some foods included in the Mediterranean diet may worsen irritable bowel syndrome. These are, for example, legumes, some whole grains, and onions.

In a new study, experts assessed the health of 59 people for six weeks. Participants either followed the Mediterranean diet as recommended by a nutritionist or followed their usual diet.

The experiment revealed that 83% of participants following the Mediterranean diet experienced a decrease in IBS-SSS (a measure of the severity of bowel symptoms) throughout the study. However, in another group of such people there were 37%.

By the end of the study, the intensity of depressive symptoms was lower in people who adhered to the Mediterranean diet, compared to others.

Also somewhat surprising is that that symptoms related to the gastrointestinal tract were not as severe in the Mediterranean diet group compared to other participants.

The study results were published in the journal Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics.
