At a TASS press conference, it was announced that scientists from the St. Petersburg Research Institute of Phthisiopulmonology and the Smorodintsev Influenza Research Institute were working on the creation of an innovative nasal vaccine against tuberculosis. NIIF Director Petr Yablonsky shared that the new vaccine, which is being tested in the third phase of clinical trials, is aimed at creating antibodies for more effective protection against the disease. The vaccine will be offered in two versions – parenteral and nasal, which will ensure comfortable use and increase its effectiveness. Yablonsky noted the need to develop new drugs against tuberculosis, since the effectiveness of the existing BCG vaccine is only 36%. Scientists are striving to achieve 80-90% guaranteed protection against the disease.
In addition to creating a vaccine, researchers are also working on targeted drugs for the treatment of tuberculosis.
