AI will create millions of times more jobs than it will destroy

Over the past few years artificial intelligence has developed so quickly that now not a month goes by without a decent lighting breakthrough in the field of AI. In a variety of areas such as speech translation, medical diagnosis and games, computers are beginning to surpass people. And similarly, are increasingly talking about how the AI will affect the employment of people. Some fear that the development of artificial intelligence, people will be less and will increase the number of unemployed not economically able to compete with cars.

This concern, though understandable, are groundless. Moreover, the artificial intelligence engine will be the greatest work that ever saw the world.

Artificial intelligence: to strike or not?

On the one hand, it is possible to justify those who predicted a massive loss of jobs to artificial intelligence. It is very easy to imagine that existing jobs will change under pressure of new technology, and it is very difficult to imagine what new jobs this new technology will provide us.

But if you think about it, radical technological advances is not a new phenomenon. Technology has developed without stopping in for 250 years and the US unemployment rate remained at the level from 5 to 10% almost all the time, even when a radical new technology such as steam power and electricity.

But why look at steam power or electricity. Just look at the Internet. Back 25 years ago, in 1993. The web browser Mosaic was released and the phrase “surfing the net” was a couple of months.

If someone asked you, what will be the result of the connection of billions of computers into a giant network of General protocols, you could imagine that you will have to send by e-mail less letters, and the network is forced to read fewer Newspapers. You might be able to make purchases online. If you were especially far-sighted, you could even assume that this technology will negatively affect the work of travel agents and stockbrokers. It would be easy to assume that the Internet will destroy jobs.

But today we know what happened actually. Of course, everything changed. But the changes were unexpected. There were thousands of new companies worth trillions of dollars. We have improved almost everything on the planet, which included this technology. Dozens of new careers, from web designers to data scientists and online marketers. The cost of opening a business with worldwide coverage has fallen sharply and the cost of communication with customers and potential customers has decreased almost to zero. A huge repository of information became widely available and used by entrepreneurs around the world.

However, Yes, we write letters less and buy fewer Newspapers.

The development of artificial intelligence

And here comes a new, even more destructive in every sense of the technology: artificial intelligence. And again we hear the old song: “It will take away jobs.”

Let’s look at a typical ATM. If you had to choose a technology that would have looked like she was going to replace all the people ATM have fitted right in. Nevertheless, Bank employees are much higher today than ATMs. How so? Yes, everything is simple: ATMs have reduced the cost of opening Bank branches, banks have opened more branches by inviting more people.

Similarly, the AI will create millions of jobs, which is much greater than our understanding. For example, AI will become an expert in the field of language translation and will increase the demand for people-interpreters. Why? If the cost of a normal translation will fall almost to zero to fall and the cost of doing business with those who speak other languages. Thus, we will expand business overseas, creating more work for people-interpreters. AI can do a simple job, but for detailed work needs people.

Moreover, the emergence and spread of AI promises faster than average, growth in the number of jobs in many occupations that seemingly could replace AI: accountants, forensic experts, geologists, technical translators, web developers, nurses and other representatives of customers. These areas will have to hire new people not in spite of AI, and thanks to him.

But, as in the case of the Internet, real jobs will appear where our imagination is not yet able to captivate us.

Electricity changed the world as mechanical force, as a conveyor. No one today can accurately say that we would be better off without these technologies. They have improved our lives, created jobs, increased wages. Artificial intelligence is more than the electricity than mechanization and all that was before him.

That’s how a free economy and that’s why we have never ending jobs due to automation. The world will always have the same jobs as both buyers and sellers.
