In fact, have long been under development in the field of creation of means for the generation of energy from water. In fact, everything sounds easy: just need to break the bonds between hydrogen and oxygen in the water molecule and you will get access to a virtually inexhaustible source of environmentally friendly fuel. In fact, most of these developments are extremely expensive and disadvantageous from the economic point of view, and from the point of view of efficiency. However, a group of researchers from the USA recently introduced a new efficient method of obtaining fuel from water.
Based on the above mechanism, the separation of molecules is the process called electrolysis, and substances which are used for this purpose, accordingly, the electrolytic cells. The most efficient electrolyzers are created with the use of corrosive acids and the electrodes to start the reaction. In the basis the latter is used oxides of iridium or ruthenium as the most effective. The only problem is that iridium is very stable, but it is very expensive, and ruthenium, though “ranks second” — on the effectiveness of the leader him away.

As reported by the editorial Board Phys.org a group of researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have found a way out of the situation and decided not to use oxide 1 and 2, replacing the iridium on yttrium. During the tests with different types of acids found that during reactions of the alloy with yttrium and ruthenium becomes less porous and takes on a new crystalline structure. This new feature allows to split water molecules with extremely high speed. Several times faster than all existing competitors on the market. According to lead author Hong Yang,
“Stability of the electrodes in the presence of acid was the main problem of carrying out such reactions. But we seem to have stumbled onto something new. Our discovery could be an important step to technology for environmentally friendly hydrogen fuel.”
Now a team of scientists continued the experiments and plans to create a working prototype of the installation for the splitting of water to improve the stability and quality of the electrodes.
