Sony has introduced a new CMOS sensor for smartphones with the highest industry resolution. Sensor received permission 48 effective megapixels.
Sensor size is 8 mm in diagonal. According to the manufacturer, it boasts the most compact in the world of pixels — 0.8 µm, which allowed to achieve high resolution at this size.
Usually this approach decreases the sensitivity, but the Quad technology allows Bayer to avoid it because it combines four pixels into one. When shooting in poor lighting conditions, the camera resolution drops to 12 MP, but the picture quality will stay high. In addition to photos, a camera with this sensor will be able to shoot 4K video at a speed of 90 frames per second and 1080p at a speed of 240 fps.
Sony sensor IMX586 costs about 27 $ with taxes and will start shipping to partners in September 2018.
