A curious robot will be aboard the ISS during the next mission resupply SpaceX. It is made in the form of a ball with a flattened side with a screen, on which is painted his face. He can speak, respond to verbal commands and fly. The robot called CIMON, short for “interactive mobile companion of the crew,” and it is essentially a flying brain from IBM with the body and the mechanism for flight from Airbus. This is a joint project of the companies which should simplify the work of astronauts on Board the International space station.
The robot was developed in order to display repair instructions by voice command, and hands astronauts were free or busy repair. CIMON will also be able to demonstrate the procedures of experiments and simply serve as a standalone database with voice control. Before it is fully operational, it will have to pass several tests on arrival at the station.
German astronaut Alexander Gerst will use the CIMON for experiments with crystals and Rubik’s cube, as well as to conduct a medical experiment in which the robot will serve as a flying camera. IBM taught CIMON with the use of voice Gersta, and the current version of the robot is responsible specifically for his team. This will help space agencies around the world to find out how useful is AI in space and can I take it in the future in the long-term mission.
Previously flown Falcon 9 rocket with supplies CIMON and astronauts, as well as new scientific instruments will have to go today, June 29, unless the startup will not survive due to weather conditions.
