Volvo prepares unmanned crossover, where you can sleep in transit

Next generation of its flagship crossover Volvo XC90 will get a system of automated driving Level 4. This means that the autopilot will be completely ready for driving without the driver’s help even in emergency situations. Unlike modern systems of auto-pilot, the new Volvo will be a NAP in transit on the highways without fear that automation will ask the driver to take over in the way. This was announced by Vice-President of the Swedish automaker, Henrik green.

The new system was named Highway Assist, it will be available in production cars from 2021.

The community of automotive engineers (eng. Society of Automotive Engineers , SAE) opredelyaet five levels of automated driving vehicles. The first level — cruise control, automatic acceleration control and braking when the vehicle follows the next participant in the movement. Cars of the second level are able to independently steer and maintain speed for a short amount of time. On the third level of automation the vehicle can move independently for a long time, but will regularly require the intervention of the driver if the situation requires it, according to automation. Autopilot 4-level routes independently and does not require driver intervention everywhere, where the technical conditions allow Autonomous driving. And finally, cars of the fifth level will receive a fully responsive, suitable for any coating, road conditions and directions of the autopilot, which will completely abandon the manual control of the vehicle.

The subsystem of automatic piloting and security help Volvo drivers now. In November 2017, the emergency braking system in the trunk of the Volvo FH truck saved the life of a student who ran across the road in the wrong place.
