Scientists: we have no idea who we will turn to the sex with robots

One Mask you know what awaits us in the future. Flying cars and underground (overground) tunnels? Life on Mars? On The Moon? Many people are working to make this a reality. But there are more mundane, physical things that are not alien to us. Everyone knows that robots will become a sex toy (or maybe even partners) for people. But nobody knows how it will change people. To understand the impact on the psyche can have sex with robots and its ubiquity, some British researchers decided to review all the data for this question. Their findings were published this week in the journal BMJ Sexual & Reproductive Health.

A little dive into the depth of the issue: at least four companies in the industry of sex technology ($30 billion) are already selling robots to have sex, which scientists define as “realistic mannequins with varying age, appearance and texture, and custom oral, vaginal and anal holes”. Of course, this is far from the robots of brothels “World Wild West”, but current models are already at 17,000 dollars for the most realistic.

Some companies are already developing more advanced bots, which in addition to sexual services will be able to maintain conversations. Studies show that 40% of men are willing to buy out there somewhere in the next five years. And 49% of men are willing to enter into a relationship with the “ultra-realistic” doll.

What are all the faces? Scientists don’t know. Their search has raised exactly zero scientific research on this topic. But this does not prevent supporters of the sex with robots to do the “optimistic” forecasts about the benefits to health that can bring these devices. Among them: robots can provide safer sex, help with sexual dysfunction, to alleviate loneliness and to satisfy people’s needs in intimacy. Only here no research to support these ideas was conducted.

But what if these allegations are unsafe for us? Some fear that sexual robots will lead to increased violence against women, reduce the value of the search for human intimacy or negatively affect “real” romantic relationship. And again, there are no studies that could confirm or refute.

And the lack of research is easy to explain: for a long time such robots can not be bought. Now, when they went on sale, scientists can do a thorough study of the issues of sexual relations with robots and to protect us from unwanted consequences in the future. It remains to find volunteers for research.
