Soft Teddy bears seem harmless — just as long as hackers don’t use them for tracking. Amazon has announced that it has removed from its online store CloudPets, intelligent toy with security issues. Last week it was also made by Walmart and Target. In the morning they were no longer in the catalogs of Amazon. The decision was taken a day after Mozilla has contacted Amazon and demonstrated new vulnerabilities CloudPets.
“In a world where data breaches are becoming more routine, and products such as CloudPets, are still on the shelves, I am increasingly worried about privacy and security of their children,” says Ashley Boyd, Vice President for security Mozilla.
Amazon has stopped selling the products because of fears of security, not for the first time. Last July, the online retailer has frozen the sale of Blu phones — at the time they sold very well, because the researchers found the virus on the popular devices.
Connected devices are open to attacks for a variety of reasons, regardless of whether they are default passwords, update their software, or that they are doing the owners. With the development of Internet of things things start to live by themselves, but someone has to take care of their vulnerability to different kind of attacks.
CloudPets makes the company Spiral Toys is a talking toys that connect to the Network, can record voice and activate via online-application via Bluetooth. In 2017, the hackers gained access to the database CloudPets, which was the e-mail addresses, passwords, and voice recordings of children, for which the attackers demanded a ransom at least twice. The hacking affected more than 800,000 people.
Mozilla worked with cyber security company Cure53 and found that security holes are not patched CloudPets 2017. They still exist, after more than a year. Spiral Toys for queries not responding.
“The company clearly does not care about the security and integrity of user data does not violate, and has not made any effort to respond to well-described reports of attacks even more easier and welcoming malicious actions against their users,” according to Mozilla.
Be careful of buying connected toys for their children.
