Artificial intelligence Google redoubled efforts in news coverage

In its updated news app Google has doubled the use of artificial intelligence in an effort to combat misinformation and help users in getting acquainted with viewpoints outside of their own “filter bubble.” The head of Google, Sundar Pichai, who presented the updated Google News earlier this month said that “now the application is you are interested in news from trusted sources, while providing a full range of perspectives on events”.

Google seriously plans to be at the center of online news and try to help publishers to paid subscribers through the platform of technogiant. According to the chief product developer Tristan Upstill, a news app “uses the best from artificial intelligence to search for the best of human intelligence — great stories that come from journalists around the world.”

While the app will allow users to get “personalized” news, it will also include the most popular stories for all readers, trying to break the so-called filter bubble of information that reinforces people’s prejudices and biases.

“To a conversation or a debate was productive, everyone should have access to the same information,” says Astill.

He says that “full coverage” is the same for all — “depersonalisation view of events from a variety of trusted news sources”.

However, some veterans in the industry of journalism was skeptical about the efforts on the replacement of editors-people curators machines.

“Fantasies about algorithmically personalized news are long-standing,” says Professor of journalism at new York University’s Meredith Broussard. “No one has done it correctly. I think the designers and editors of the news home pages have already a good job with curation”.

Don’t forget also that Google and Facebook were criticized for the fact that the company took away most of the profit from online advertising, and for disseminating false information. Let’s see what will change this time.
