Scientists have discovered how different types of alcohol affect emotions

For anybody not a secret that alcohol is directly associated with the emotional state of a person. It lifts the mood, and someone, on the contrary, depressing. Someone liberates alcohol, and someone makes a more aggressive and combative. British scientists (where do without them?) conducted research linking the various types of alcoholic beverages with the emotional state of a person. On their findings you can read in this article.

“Understanding the connection between emotions and different alcoholic beverages necessary in the first place, in order to try to prevent alcohol abuse among the population. But we first need to understand how certain spirits affect the emotions of the representatives of different segments of the population who use them,” write British researchers in their scientific work.

As material for the study, researchers used data from the world’s largest online poll on the use and abuse adult alcohol and drugs – Global Drug Survey. This survey includes questions about the number, types of alcohol consumed, but also about the emotions that makes a person use a particular type of alcohol. According to the survey, people most often associate drinking alcohol with vigor, relaxation, increased sexual desire, self-confidence, fatigue, aggression and so on.

After analyzing the results of a survey of more than 30,000 people aged 18 to 31 years from 21 countries, the researchers found a pattern in respect of certain alcoholic beverages and certain emotional state in humans. Red wine, for example, relaxes the man. As, however, and beer – over 50% of respondents agreed on this opinion. But spirits often awaken people’s aggression. Their respondents were the least likely associated with state of relaxation or rest.

“For many centuries the use of rum, gin, vodka and other strong alcoholic beverages was associated with violence. And our global research proves that strong alcohol is often a cause of aggressive human behavior,” writes study co-author Professor Bangor University mark Bellis.

Aggression is not the only emotion associated with people with strong spirits. Some people believe that the alcohol gives them energy, confidence and makes them more sexually attractive. Scientists in their study also noted that the survey results vary greatly depending on the level of education of respondents, their country of residence and age. For example, young people aged 18 to 24 years associate almost any alcohol with the self-confidence and sexual liberation.

The gender of respondents and the amount of alcohol they consume also has a strong influence on the emotional consequences of drinking alcohol. Women, for example, men more often associate positive emotions with different types of alcohol. But no matter how varied the poll results, one thing has always remained the same: spirits in the minds of people directly associated with aggression. Of course, scientists can not with 100% accuracy to link each specific type of alcohol with any particular emotion, but their insights should be heeded. Especially if you do like to lean on strong. The results of the study can be read in the journal BMJ Open.
