Sometimes miracles happen not only on New year’s, and amazing gadgets out there, from not waiting. However, to say that the hero of today’s review, portable DAC Cozoy REI gave nothing away, the potential will still be some exaggeration.
First, Cozoy is close “friends” or “relatives” of the company Shozy have repeatedly proved that they know how to make the sound (example 1, example 2). Second, the price of $ 550 is also good, although not 100% a symptom of an interesting device. Third, that baby was recommended to me well versed in the sound of the familiar, in General, I could not pass up, and REI was completely justified.
Usually in the Preface, I describe the technical findings used by developers put emphasis on some unusual decisions, but with REI it will not work. Cozoy as faithful followers Shozy, did not reveal the secret of what is inside REI, proposing to assess the sound, not the components. I like this idea in General, like, in the pursuit of “tough stuffing” many audiophiles really forget about the sound, so we will not be like them, will test this device by the method of black box. Besides that, I just don’t want to break your REI, I love it.

Packing and delivery
In General the box is made simply: white thick cardboard with silver lettering. Cozoy did not invent anything pretentious, focusing on the device itself. In addition to the DAC in the box are several pamphlets: manual promo code to download multiple DSD tracks, is iOS player that is optimized to work with this DAC. Also thought about the convenience of the users and put in a set of three cable for Lightning devices from Apple, Android and MicroUSB to normal USB for desktop systems. The wire short that is optimized for mobile use. According to the developers, it uses very high quality silver plated wire and silk insulation. In principle, of course, lacks USB-C for a complete set, but the prudence of the company’s still impressive.
Design and management
While REI went to me, I studied his pictures in the Network, noting the design interesting. In reality, this Capek managed to surprise me, as its size was much smaller than what I imagined. The thickness of 6 mm is really small, and weighs 20 grams allows us to consider REI weightless. Add to this the stylish aluminium casing, the interesting shape and look to be completed. Small size, on the one hand, this “harvester” is the perfect companion for almost any device, allowing you to put a thin “sandwich”. On the other hand, people with superficial thinking used to consider that “weight is sign of reliability, for me reliability is the main thing.” However, REI clearly solidly assembled, to kill someone will not work, but also to break the accident is also problematic.
How do Cozoy managed something to put inside that case is an interesting mystery, sometimes I wonder what is inside, but as long as greed outweighs curiosity, and open REI I’m in no hurry.
Interface everything is done very simply, on the one hand is the entrance, on the other — 3.5 mm headphone output, so the connection will handle even expelled for academic failure from a physical College. On the body there is a flat button that works with most devices like a play button and pause. Your volume control in the device, so volume adjustment is carried out by the source.
Of course, if you use this gadget with a mobile phone power taken from the smartphone, which affects his work time. By my rough measurements, the rate of discharge of the iPhone 6 Plus when listening to music with REI somewhere in one and a half times higher than without it, but it charges for high-quality sound. The developers recommend player Relisten, but I looked at its price, decided to skip the purchase. Of course, the functionality of this player is very good, and the improvement in sound, judging by the reviews, is the place to be, but to overcome one well-known amphibian, causing asphyxia, I couldn’t. Have a Relisten is a light version limited by time, so if you want to evaluate it, I decided to limit the old-fashioned (when did they update the interface?) Onkyo HF.
Sound
To listen following equipment was used.
- Apple MacBook Pro Retina 2016 and iPhone 6 Plus in the role of sources of
- Audirvana+ and Onkyo HF role players
- Headphones: Meze Classics 99, Audio Zenith PMx2, Noble Kaiser Encore, Campfire Audio Andromeda and other
- Recording high-resolution Lossless-formats (Dr. Chesky have The Ultimate Headphone Demonstration Disc and others)
Of course, the main thing in this and any other similar device is the sound, no matter how beautiful a portable DAC, if it does not sound, this device is doomed to die in obscurity (especially with a price tag in excess of $ 500). Fortunately, Cozoy not seen in the baseless inflation of prices, and their solutions often sound “on the money”. Based on these assumptions, we should not be surprised that REI got out one of the best sound devices in a portable audio (with some, of course, amendments).
The bass here is surprisingly deep, with very good resolution and textures. DAC beautifully controlled bass (as, indeed, the rest of the band), when it is reacting fast strokes, and when necessary — enveloping bass. “Bottom”, despite the massiveness, doesn’t sound smazano that gives a lovely natural effect. The lightest touch of heat provides the “spice” that dilutes the neutral sound REI, adding his own character.
The mid-frequency range are presented in a natural and musical manner, without trying to change something in the source sound, so you should not expect from REI an extension of emotion or tricks with the construction of an imaginary scene, but something that is present in the recording, it will give with admirable thoroughness. High-quality instrumental records, as well as vocals, in the performance of this kid, sound incredibly impressive and fresh. The construction of an imaginary scene though inferior to top-end devices, but at the price, perhaps close to unique, depth, and width, and three-dimensional positioning, and separation plans — all available here. Of course, I’m not even talking about the excellent resolution and control in micro and macrodata.
The high-frequency range is served without undue emphasis, pleasing study of the attenuation and superb detail. Attack is a little softer than I would like sometimes, but it is rather the manner of delivery of the device. The sound of REI has enough lightness to keep all those nuances that distinguish the top of the device. So that fans of the transparency of the upper range here is where carousing.
Will not do this review without a couple of comparisons (to compare REI with the players, I deliberately do not want as a primary and secondary segment he replays, and tops — they are tops).
Chord Mojo. On the one hand, Mojo at a similar price offers more inputs and outputs, built-in battery, self-adjusting the volume — all this makes this solution more universal, but on the other hand — the sound of everything is not so simple. REI sounds more natural, less pumped “drama”, offering a more natural flow and less simplified HF. Of course, Mojo is noticeably more power, but also more background noise with sensitive IEM. Well, you should not forget about the size of the resulting issue of wearing comfort.
CEntrance BlueDAC. A fresh addition to the range of CEntrance offers newfangled wireless interface, balanced output and, again, some increase in sound quality. While it’s a miracle waiting for their turn to review briefly about the difference in sound (let’s leave size out of the equation). BlueDAC sounds very detailed, skillfully, with a little better resolution, but on the side of REI — more continuous flow with a small addition of heat. So the choice here should be on the basis of personal preference, both options are good and both have the “right to life”.
Compatibility
Yes, 1 volt output at a load of 32Ω is clearly not much tight full-size model with this DAC is not exactly to listen. On the other hand, for the vast majority of IEM is a great value, allowing to achieve a completely “black background”, without the slightest hint of noise, and for the adequate full-size models, this is enough. Although it is the top in-ear model is the main burden for this baby.
REI seamlessly with nearly any vehicle, understanding USB Audio, be it a smartphone, computer or player. For example, it is possible to collect a good bunch, using as a source the same Shanling M2S.
Stylistically, this device is not expressed preferences, successfully coping with all that comes to him. Sensitivity to the quality of the recording is reasonable, somewhere in the 7 out of 10, and the disadvantages you will hear, but they would not bulge “in your face”, so they can be relatively comfortable to get along with.
Traditionally, three tracks as examples
Therion — Children of the Stone. In some ways “typical” composition of the present stage of development of Therion: slow tempo, choir, interesting orchestration and subtle diversity. REI then shows itself not just good, but excellent: all instruments worked fine, the choir sounds well-rounded and realistic, immersive close to exemplary.
Thelonious Monk — Bolivar Blues. Perhaps, “Monk’s Dream” is for me a model of the work of the jazz pianist of the Golden era. Even leaving out the excellent work of Thelonious, it can be noted the excellent quality recording and excellent work accompanying composition that makes the whole album a real feast for the ears, especially if you have Cozoy REI, well win back all the fine Nancy record.
Rush — Time Stand Still. It is a pity that before the release of the film adaptation of Board books all geeks “the First player to get ready” still have a lot of time. On the other hand, while it is possible again to re-take all your favorite games (my choice — Prehistoric 2) and listened to the Rush discography. I could choose any track, therefore, gave a voice to the random number generator and it chose the great song of the new album ‘ 87. REI and here shows himself at the height of both vocals, virtuosic percussion, beautiful guitar — all played on a level close to the reference.
Insights
After reading this review, I thought. On the one hand, Cozoy REI turned, that is, “not for all”-after all, the price is very high, and the “exhaust” is not the most powerful. Add to this the inertia of thinking, “how such a little device might cost so expensive?”. On the other hand, the sound of REI came close to top-end models, especially for lovers of IEM, and surpass it in this niche is unrealistic. So then the only question is — how many buyers are willing to pay for the ideal.
