Humanity has quite a lot of plans for the exploration of the red planet for the next few years, but whether the Internet those who will go to Mars? Last weekend, Elon Musk answered questions from Reddit, among which was this one.
On Saturday, Elon Musk participated in an AMA (“Ask me anything”) on Reddit, where he answered questions regarding the latest SpaceX rocket, on which active work, Big Fucking Rocket. One of the users asked question about the Internet: “do you have Plans for SpaceX to place more satellites in orbit around Mars (or even missiles) to Internet and connection, before we get off on solid ground? 5-6 current or active satellites is enough?”.
Musk said in his joking manner: “If someone identifies a desire to build fat broadband cable to Mars now.”
So, how realistic is it for Internet on Mars? Fantasy or reality? One Reddit user suggested an interesting idea:
“The idea to hold an Internet connection with Mars the magnificent. Theoretically, it would be possible to do Internet Protocol, which will display a subset of the Internet near Mars. The user will request access to the segments of the Internet that he wants to go, and servers will synchronize relevant data. Since the connection on the server side would be impractical, it may be a standard format for rendering pages.”
This view prompted the Mask to answer simply: “Zadrot”. This, of course, respectful treatment.
Within the permissible
Of course, Musk dug deeper. He briefly painted as it could be arranged, and also noted that the distance from Earth to Mars – 22 light minutes at maximum range. 3 minutes at the minimum. So in the future, this attitude could be maintained.
The idea of interplanetary Internet POPs up is not the first time. Even in 2015, Musk has offered to place hundreds of satellites in 1200 kilometers from Earth, which would ensure data exchange. He even seriously declared the intention to create a system of global communication. The logic is that the light in the vacuum of space moves faster than the Earth’s atmosphere.
Also in September of last year Newsweek discussed this topic with Josh Bema, a former employee of SpaceX. It seems that currently, satellites and infrastructure, which could bring this idea to life, yet. But because people haven’t gotten to Mars and have not even started the journey several years we have still. The important thing is that Mask there are ideas, thanks to Reddit. That’s where he draws his inspiration.
Now Elon Musk knows how to run to Mars online
