Police Zanzibar ’hunts’ on gays

The police on the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar wants to homosexuals “hunt down” and bring them to justice.

Police commander Hassan Ali Nasri has said Monday. The police picked up Friday twenty alleged homosexual men and women who participated in a workshop on health care. They are now all released on bail, said Nasri.

Homosexuality in Tanzania is legally prohibited, but is normally not prosecuted. Zanzibar is an autonomous part of Tanzania and has a predominantly muslim population. The island counts as socially more conservative than the mainland.
