According to the publisher, a new method of treatment has received the name of the CAR. Its essence is that after a number of modifications of the own cells of the patient’s blood begin to attack cancerous tumors. For this method the researchers selected blood cells of the patient, preprogramming them to fight the cells of the disease and create millions of copies. After this, the cells returned to the body, where they are struggling with the disease for several months or even years. According to a representative of the FDA’s Scott Gottlieb,
“We are entering a new stage in the development of medical innovation with the ability to reprogram our own cells to attack deadly cancer. Treatment with CAR-T will cost 475 thousand dollars, but the company Novartis Pharmaceuticals undertakes not to take money from patients.”
It is worth saying that the market for gene therapy has the potential for rapid growth in the next decade. The FDA approved the use of gene therapy for patients aged 3 to 25 years, suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Many have already called this gesture “a step in the medicine of the future”.
