EU helps burnt black Portugal

BRUSSELS –

The European Union allows up to 45 million euros to Portugal for the recovery of the damage the fires have caused.

The fire destroyed in June estimated that more than 40,000 hectares of forest. A total of 64 people were killed and there were more than 150 wounded. The fire raged in the region about 200 kilometers northeast of the capital, Lisbon.

Up to 25 million euro is available for small and medium-sized companies to machines or other equipment that has been lost to be replaced.

Creţu underlined European solidarity with Portugal, which is plagued by a new series of forest fires. Also, with the financial support of the EU, Spain has 160 firefighters, 27 vehicles and four fire-fighting planes sent to assist the fire under control.
