Nature is full of amazing phenomena. In the course of evolution living organisms have learned to do such tricks that still regularly surprise even seasoned scientists. Take for example, goldfish (Carassius auratus) and Golden carp (Carassius carassius). When these fish feel like “winter is coming”, their body is saturated with ethanol. Norwegian scientists have found that high alcohol content in fish bodies does not allow to be torn thin cell membranes even in a time when they for a long time freezes into ice, waiting for warming.
Goldfish and carp are really able to suspend virtually all vital processes when necessary, and to fall into a state of suspended animation. For anybody not a secret that these fish freezes into ice and thus survive the winter at temperatures below zero. Ethanol, their body produces with the help of special proteins, processing the lactic acid into alcohol. Such an unusual protective mechanism is activated only when the fish disappears the oxygen supply. The longer gold fish holds ice in an oxygen-free environment, the more it produces lactic acid and, consequently, of ethanol.
Ethanol serves as a kind of antifreeze for frozen fish, and lactic acid, which is produced by the body due to lack of oxygen and, as a rule, kills it, in the course of evolution have come to fish for help, becoming a source of saving of alcohol. Of course, this process is infinite can not last, and the fish will die if the winter is unduly delayed. However, in most cases, the fish still hold out till spring comes after an “ice Bender”. Scientists from the University of Oslo published their findings in the journal Nature.
