Current developments in the ability to restore people’s sight and hearing, usually aimed at the restoration of the senses. But experts of the American University Risa decided to go the other way, creating a brain implant FlatScope, which is able to receive information from external devices, and then, processing the data and stimulating certain brain areas to compensate for the loss of sight and hearing.
That the Federal defense Agency advanced research projects Agency announced a competition, whose goal is the creation of such devices was announced last week. The study is planned to allocate about $ 65 million. At the initial stage, the developers will receive four million dollars, which will allow them to continue research and development of hardware-software complex to restore vision.
Modern systems operating in the same way, quite limited in their capabilities, so the quality of capturing, transmitting and processing information of speech does not go. The laboratory staff of the University of Risa’s plan to transfer research to a new level and create the neural interface, directly affecting hundreds of thousands, and eventually millions of neurons in the cerebral cortex.
“People can create complex and miniature chips and components for smartphones, for example, why can’t we do something similar, using available technology when creating neural interfaces?” says Jacob Robinson, head of the engineering laboratory of the University.
While the project is still at a very early stage, so to speak of the beginning of the trial is premature, but work is already underway, and with the financing problems is not planned.
