No, we goals not on small Daffodils or Limburg MINI’s, but on a seemingly doodsimpele invention with, as it turns out now, giant impact.
We’re talking about arrows on the signage that is up instead of pointing down. There is years ago, research done in the Netherlands, showing that arrows up a much more logical choice (from verkeerspsychologisch point of view), arrows that point down. Downward pointing arrows may get an inhibitory effect, while hemelwijzende arrows the flow of traffic promote it. At the last make-over of our road signs, the so-called ‘Directive signage 2014’, the arrows on the so-called portaalborden also be rotated 180 degrees.
Also in Belgium continued this research does not go unnoticed and it was decided to test on the ring of Antwerp. The Flemish news site Knack.be announces today that the avoid congestion on the Antwerp ring, thanks to the up-pointing arrows with half(!) is decreased. Bizarre that such a small detail, such a huge impact.
