“US to supply frigates to Taiwan

WASHINGTON –

The U.s. government will still be this week the sale of two geleidewapenfregatten to Taiwan approve, in spite of China’s opposition to the deal. This, said sources in the Us Congress Monday.

“We are expecting this week a notice about this,” said a Republican source within the Congress. Another source said that the notification “any day now” is expected.

The Congress signed in december last year, a law that allows up to four frigates to Taiwan to sell. Taiwan expects that about 176 million dollars (160 million euros) must pay for the two warships. Or, possibly, the other two frigates want to buy, is not yet known.

The sale would be the first time in four years that the United States arms supply to Taiwan, the longest period in nearly four decades without weapon sales to this country.

China has the deliveries in the past severely condemned. Also now sounds solid criticism. The Chinese embassy says vigorously to oppose the arms sale. “We call on the U.s. government to stop the sale of weapons to Taiwan in order to avoid that the relations between China and the US suffer.”
