2002 Turbo Vs M2
The finest BMW from the 70s, versus perhaps the finest BMW’s from the years ’10. And to you the difficult task to choose.

Although the two cars in the first instance, not much in common with each other seem to have, are the similarities, on closer inspection, larger than you think. Both are the ultimate version of the smallest car sedan/coupé from the then-current range, both of which are equipped with turbo technology and both are quite aggressive, and decked out. Although undoubtedly known, we explore briefly in the specs of both cars.

The original: BMW 2002 Turbo

The timing could hardly be worse, at the height of the oil crisis in 1973 launches the BMW 2002 Turbo. Served as the basis the already common four cylinder engine from the 2002 Tii, where then a turbo screwed on. The result was a for that time astronomical 170 hp on a car weight of 1080 kilos. The top speed is 209 km/h, while the hundred in 7.5 seconds is reached.

Drive to the rear wheels and with a massive turbogat and the absence of any form of electronic tools, a real widowmaker. Incidentally, also quite some 2002 Turbo’s fallen prey to overheated turbos. If, after a piece of sturdy boenderen forgot to take his 2002 Turbo a bit to let it cool down before the contact, had usually to pay with a burning car…

The spiritual successor: BMW M2 Perfomance

BMW M2 Performance

While the M3 by the years more and lijviger, BMW is a much nicer alternative: the 1M Coupe. That was still no M1 in order to avoid confusion with the supercar from the 70’s, but now the 1 Series Coupe is followed by the 2 Series, is called the M-version is now just M2.

Under the hood is the familiar drieliter six-in-line, equipped with two turbo’s. The capacity amounts to a very healthy 370 horsepower, all of which are released on the rear wheels. Zero to hundred comes in just 4.3 seconds, while the top is limited to 250 km/h. Shifting is not there any more, but for the diehards can the electronic safety nets, however.

Compared to the regular M2, adds these M Perfomance not so much, other than some nice visual distractions. Only exception to this is the adjustable suspension, which allows you to M2 for another 5 millimeters closer to the asphalt can. Of course, it is the colour of a thick nod to the past and also a good opportunity for this comparison.
