Forget the SM, DS and CX Turbo II, this largely forgotten Citroen BX 4TC is the coolest Citroen ever.
What do you think of Citroën, then you’re probably thinking of ‘comfortable’ and ‘unusual’ and not ‘racing’. Not entirely correct, because the brand with the double chevron is very successful in the WRC, WTCC and Dakar. Mid 80’s they decided to Citroën to join to the Group B-rallyklasse, where concerngenoot Peugeot at that time already in, came out with the 205 Turbo 16.
If the basis was the then still very fresh. BX taken, but there had to be pretty messed around. As it turned out, none of the BX-blocks are strong enough to make a thick turbo to mount, and so was opted for the 2.2 four-cylinder engine from the then-already quite outdated Chrysler-Simca 180. The FIA took a maximum capacity of three litres capacity, but a turbo was seen as a multiplication factor of 1.4 x With the 2155cc was the original block so narrowly to large (2155 x 1.4 = 3017) and so was the stroke volume will be reduced to 2141,5 cc.
Where the engines in the regular BX’and dwarsgeplaatst, is the Simca-block in the longitudinal direction in the BX TC4. Therefore, the body of the BX 4TC is not only significantly wider, but I got it the car also has a much longer nose fitted. Together with the four flood lights between the headlights, the thick powerdome on the hood and the rims on the CX Turbo II, that of the BX 4TC a very cool appearance.
Unfortunately, you win rallystages no points with your coolness factor, but you will have to perform. This succeeded only moderately, further than a sixth place during the Swedish rally of 1986 was the 4TC never. That the car is only three races has driven before the power plug from the life-threatening Group B was drawn, helped, of course.
That Citroen have not had success on the rallystages also fell potential customers. There were in the factory, in fact, exactly 200 street versions of the 4TC, need to take the car to approve for the Group B championship. Only 62 copies of this 200 hp BX knew one to sell, of which a considerable part also bought back was due to quality and reliability problems. Just like most of the unsold copies, also went to this redeemed 4TC’s straight into the shredder. That makes the coolest Citroen ever so also one of the rarest…
