Since last year, the whole of the Netherlands in the wake of Max Verstappen, but do you know all of his fourteen predecessors in Formula 1 also?
Dries van der Lof
Reed in 1952, together with Jan, this fall, the Grand Prix of the Netherlands on the Zandvoort circuit in an HWM. The KNAC paid 2000 guilders to the two men as a crowd-puller to drive in the Dutch Grand Prix. Van der Lof took out the finish, otherwise not.
Jan This Fall
Former Spitfire pilot. Reed as well as of Praise, but one single Formula 1 race. Did not do this in a HWM, but in a Maserati A6GCM.
Carel Godin de Beaufort
The first real F1 driver of our country, though it was Godin de Beaufort little success. This was partly due to his stature: almost two metres and a small 120 kilo clean on the hook. Money was made by his noble ancestry is not a problem and so he bought a Formula car from the brand that he is a fan of: a Porsche 718/2 Monoposto. Not the most competitive car, but the only one which Careltje paste. Nevertheless, he is able to in 1962, the sixth to finish during the Grand Prix of the Netherlands, that he is the first Dutch F1 driver is that points and managed to score. In 1964, crashed Godin de Beaufort fatal during a training session at the Nürburgring.
Ben Pon
No, this is not the Ben Pon which the Volkswagen Transporter conceived and Volkswagen importer for the Netherlands. It is his son. Pon began in 1961 with racing in -what else – a Porsche. His only F1 race was the Grand Prix of Zandvoort in 1962. He crashed in the second round and ended up unharmed in the bushes at the Scheivlak. Would never Pon in an open wheel racer steps. In 1965, stops Pon with racing and focuses on the import of Porsches. A fun fact is that he is in 1972 -without too much success, also took part in the Olympic Games in Munich, on the part… clay pigeon shooting!
Michael Event
In 1977, tried Michael Event is in vain to qualify for the GP of the Netherlands in a March. In 1978 he managed three times, also not to himself with his ATS to qualify, but during the fourth attempt at the GP of the United States was hit: Event should start! Unfortunately, it was his debut on the circuit of Watkins Glen not very successfully, in the 43rd round was Event. Then he would never be an F1 race drive and step back to the Formula 3.
Huub Rothengatter
Many will Rothergatter primarily known as the manager of Jos Verstappen, but between 1984 and 1986, reed Huub itself also in the Formula 1. Although he three times, in a not very successful team reed, he managed almost always to qualify. His best performance was a seventh place, in that time, unfortunately, not good for world cup points.
Boy Hayje
Perhaps the least well-known Dutch F1 driver, even his wikipedia page has only two sentences. He drove only three races in 1976 (for Penske) and 1977 (for F&S Chevron), but earned no points.
Jan Lammers
Together with the two Verstappens, Gijs van Lennep, Arie Luyendyk, one of the undisputed Dutch autosporthelden. Won the 1988 Le Mans, where he has 13 of the 24 hours behind the wheel. Initially, however, it is not the sportscars, but the Formula 1 in which Lammers has set his mind. In 1979 he rides his first race for Shadow. In 1980, he moved to ATS, where he found the first three races do not qualify and then in Long Beach for a fourth starting spot to ride! The same year he rides for Ensign, again in a very light car. In 1982, knows Lammers located in a Theodore only to qualify for the GP of the Netherlands, but after that it seems his F1 career to a halt.
But then, in 1992 during the Grand Prix of Japan, Lammers on the grid with a March. After ten years of absence, Jan Lammers back in F1, a record that still stands. Also in Australia, the last race of the season, Lammers at the start. Initially, it seems that he also in 1993 the F1 will drive, but the team is not bankrupt before then.
Gijs van Lennep
The Dutch and the Formula 1, it just didn’t work. Also Gijs van Lennep, nota bene two-time winner of the 24 hours of Le Mans, it was not a seat to get in a top team. Instead, he drove eight races for several teams and spread out over a period from 1971 to 1975. However, he obtained in 1973 and the first point for the then-new team of Frank Williams.
Roelof Wunderink
Roelof whom? Wunderink was a late bloomer, who only at the age of 21 began with auto racing. In total started he three F1 races, all of whom he did not know to drive. After he’s in his third Grand Prix in the United States was inoperative, was Wunderink size full: he stopped racing.
Jos Verstappen
Finally, the Netherlands had a Formula 1 driver who is not one of the race reed, but just year-in-year-out for several teams came out. Made his debut Jos for the top team Benetton, where he started out as a test driver drove, but soon the injured JJ Lehto should be replaced. He drove in his debut year immediately to two third places, the first F1 podiums for a Dutchman. Managed to debutant Verstappen no lasting impression to leave behind, that the rookie made his debut alongside none other than Michael Schumacher did not make it easier. If you Max last year in addition to Hamilton would let you drive, not really a good start of your career… In 1995, ’96 and ’97 reed Jos respectively Simtek, Arrows and Tyrrell-Ford. The seasons after that is Jos the dupe of devious games, rich drivers with a lot of sponsorship and development of a new Honda-team that is in a late stage, however, is not continued.
In 2000 Jos back, in the promising Arrows. A on the straights very fast car, which is unfortunately not very reliable. Nevertheless, it succeeds Jos a number of times his business card, with nice action and very nice results. In 2001, he rides again for Arrows, but the car is unfortunately barely better than the year before. However, driving Jos a fabulous GP of Malaysia, where he in one round of an eighteenth starting spot to a sixth position driving. Briefly, he drives even second in the wet race, but later on it lost asphalt a number of faster cars pass. Finally, he is seventh. In 2002, choose Arrows for the money of Frentzen, but his pocket money can not prevent the team halfway through the season to go bankrupt. In 2003 Jos back again, for the team of Minardi. The car is however bad and after the season is the cake for Verstappen, he hangs his helmet on the willows. A shame, because Jos is a much better driver than most people think.
Christijan Albers
As successful as Albers was in the DTM, so moderate did him in Formula 1. Three seasons driving the citizen of eindhoven, respectively for Minardi, Midland and Spyker. In his last season he drives not only the pit lane with a half tankinstallatie still on his car dangling, but he is eventually fired because he allegedly no longer meet his financial obligations.
Robert Doornbos
In 2004, Doornbos his F1 career as testcoureur at Jorden. In 2005, he seems to have for that team is the second rider to be, but that’s not like Eddie Jordan and his team sell and Midland F1. The new owner, choose two better-paying drivers. During the few free workouts that Doornbos is allowed to drive, let he immediately to be faster than Tiago Monteiro and Nara Karthikeyan. Later in the season he replaces Friesacher at Minardi, and he team-mate of Christijan Albers. Do today in sex toys…
Giedo van der Garde
After many years as a testcoureur for Super Aguri, Spyker F1 and Caterham, he may in 2013 then finally got his F1 debut. The Caterhams are, however, condemned to the rear and, in 2014, makes Van der Garde is a move to the team from Sauber F1, where he will again testcoureur. Long, it seems that he in 2015 for Sauber to drive, but who choose on the very, very last moment for Nasr and Ericsson… A lawsuit to follow, but for Giedo is over and out, a dream to smithereens.
Max Verstappen
According to many already the best F1 driver that our country has ever known. Further explanation is superfluous, and if you want to read about ‘us’ supertalent, you will dive, but the vast Autoblog Max Verstappen-archive in.
