For the first time since the world championship of Formula 1 in 1983 binnensleepte, like the Brabham-BMW BT52 again full speed on the racing track.
BMW brought the car last weekend on the runway during the AvD Oldtimer Grand-Prix at the Nürburgring. It is the chassis that Nelson Piquet in 1983 won the title. Marc Surer, former Formula 1 and Formula 2 driver for among others BMW, was now the time of the fire-breathing turbogeblazen engines reviving.
The design is the brainchild of Gordon Murray, for the chassis was responsible, and BMW’s motorengoeroe Paul Rosche. This kampioensexemplaar is owned by the BMW Museum and this year is restored after 10 years had stood still. BMW called this the team of service technicians that also in 1983, worked on the car. Now it still could, one of them told us, because we are all still there.
The motor now runs to 10,000 rpm, which he used in wedstrijdtrim to 13,000 rpm, which is impressive. He’s got his real work done, now it is just for the fun of it, said a mechanic with a fat Bavarian accent, gleaming with pride. The 1.5-litre four-cylinder turboblok squeezes up to 790 hp in kwalificatiesetup. For race-spec unscrewed BMW the boost down a bit so 700 hp left. From one and a half litres!
The car is largely original. The magnesium rims are for safety reasons, new, as this material ages, making it unstable. Also the fuel tank is new. There is still a fun story, told the BMW-crew us. The tank by the supplier accidentally delivered to BMW Motorsport in place of BMW Classic. Therefore, immediately arose the rumour that BMW again was busy with preparations to return to Formula 1.
The front and rear wing are once again made from carbon, on the basis of the original sizes. It helped the design team of BMW’s’s head of design Adrian van Hooydonk, that the original wings has scanned. Van Hooydonk was during the Oldtimer Grand-Prix by the way the job is active. The Dutchman did it in a M3 E30 in a race with all the iconic BMW racetoerwagens.
BMW had a lot more goodies included, like the BMW V12 LMR. Joachim Winkelhock showed that he was still hard and can go with the car that he was in the 1999 24 hours of Le Mans won. That was the crown on his long racing career with BMW.
BMW made the party complete with plenty of BMW M1 Procars in action and also beautifully preserved ex-DTM BMW M3 E30’s showed their characteristic aanzuiggeluid again loud and clear to hear.
