Volkswagen Scirocco
In 2006, Volkswagen’s IROC concept. In 2008 a nearly identical version of it on the market as the third generation Scirocco, based on the chassis of the Golf VI.

The Scirocco sold in the Netherlands unfortunately is not very good, something which partly was due to the “compartment” classification, so many leaseklanten the car is not allowed to select (while it is actually a driedeurs hatchback). Recently, Volkswagen an update, but in the Netherlands the Scirocco in the meantime, the price lists have disappeared.

Offer used cars

  • On AutoScout24 are about 150 Scirocco’s for sale.
  • 95% offer is petrol with outputs ranging from a 1.4 TSI with 122 hp to the R with 2.0 TSI and 265 hp.
  • The other 5% is diesel.
  • About 70% transmission (zesbak) and 30% is automatic transmission (DSG).
  • More than 75% is equipped with Climate Control, the rest is simple air conditioning.
  • Prices start around the 13,000 euros and there is a lot of choice up to 20.000 euro.
  • Do you want a Scirocco R with 265 hp it will cost you at least 27500 euro.
  • The Scirocco holds pieces are better value than similar-executed Waves.

Pros

  • Nicer than the Golf of your neighbor.
  • Exclusive.
  • Decent interior space despite the coupe lines.
  • Good driving characteristics.

Issues

  • The 1.4 TSI (in particular the version with 160 hp) is known to have issues with the timing chain but also the 122 hp version has its problems. The chains would last a lifetime have to go but break sometimes from 40.000 km. Flashing motorlampjes, stuttering the engine and the ticking sound are signals that something goes wrong. There is a coulanceregeling for cars out of warranty but if you have no nagging wants, you better start looking for a 2.0 TSI.
  • The gearboxes are generally robust but check with the DSG well that every 60,000 miles the oil is replaced. The first DSG’s have a recall for a software update because the link in rare cases, spontaneously disconnected. Check always or that recall is also performed. If during the driving of a vibration in the clutch touch points also to problems.
  • With regards to the manual gearbox: check whether the second gear is smooth to choose and that there are no noises from the clutch.
  • If you have a variant to buy with the variable frame DCC, check whether all three driving modes really work, and in particular, check the rear dampers on oil leaks.
  • The power steering sometimes makes some noise at low speeds.
  • The Scirocco is really new to rust so if you rust find indicates this is likely to be poorly repaired damage.
  • In particular, cars running in Candy White and Salsa Red are affected by the difference in colour between the body and the plastic bumpers and rear spoiler. This need not be directly on a bad spuitbeurt to a point.
  • The 2.0 TSI block in zustermodellen some more oil to consume, but the Scirocco seems that less. Nevertheless, it is recommended to regularly oil gauge.
  • Beeps and kraakjes, in particular, rattling the windows, has proved to be very difficult to fiksen.
  • Remotes the central locking may have to be re-programmed as it is out of sync hit, so check always this good work.
  • 19 inch wheels: they are nice but if you are too hard through a hole in the road or over a threshold they want to sometimes still have to break.
