BMW M3 E30 viercilinder
Weight reduction is becoming increasingly important in the automotive industry. The BMW M3 and M4 are, therefore, in the future, probably equipped with viercilinders.

That may sound strange now we just achtcilinders have waved and exchanged it for zescilinders with supercharging but do not forget that the first M3 based on the e30 3 Series was equipped with a four-cylinder. In terms of history, it would not be just as crazy.

There is a four-cylinder, of course, considerably less pounds in the nose than a six-cylinder engine. BMW’s Carsten Pries reports on motoring.com.au that in the next generation BMW M3 / M4 (not the F80 / F82) weight saving is very important and that, therefore, a four-cylinder turbo is a very real option.

Since BMW does not look at specific output (hp / nm’s) but to a series of benchmarks (acceleration times, bochtsnelheid, etc.) that is a M3 or M4 in terms of performance should be, it is quite possible that a four-cylinder meets the requirements for the next generation of sports fans of M Sport.

At this time, M still not viercilinders in the shelves. While it may be very logical would be to have a M2 with the four-cylinder to rest seems not to be the case. The M2 will have the same six-cylinder engine as the M3 but with a turbootje less.
