Why the Lexus LC 500h a viertraps (!) machine

While the whole world together, seems to want to exceed with seven – or eight-, no negentraps vending machines, comes Lexus with an automatic controlled gearbox. That seems hopelessly old-fashioned, but appearances can be deceiving. A genuine piece of technology after the break.
It seemed so fun when Lexus early this year in Detroit, the LC 500 presented. Not only a fine coach, but also a thick vijfliter v8 with 477 hp. The powertrain of the RC F (driving test) and GS-F, to be exact. Prior to his livedebuut in Geneva, Lexus, however, what is less nice news for us. We don’t get the LC 500, but the LC 500h. That has an additional letter, but two cylinders less. The LC 500h is a hybrid, where the total capacity with the help of an electric motor to 360 hp. Not difficult, but also not as fun as 477 atmospheric horses.

See you at the Lexus ” h ” behind the type designation, then you know not only that you are with a hybrid, but also that a CVT for the power transfer. Also the Lexus LC 500h makes use of the Lexus Hybrid System with electronically controlled continuously variable transmission, but adds a viertrapsautomaat. This is against the CVT bolted-on, and they then form one whole. Multi Stage Hybrid, called Lexus.
Who from a standing full on the gas, and some moves, however, will not four switching points to experience, but ten. Just as in other hybrids from Lexus, the CVT is a kind of virtual gears to simulate. In the LC 500h will have six, combined with the four real object is the total on ten. Adding a real automatic transmission has a number of advantages. So you can faster acceleration than with a CVT, as the engine at lower speeds, more torque can be delivered. In Lexus’ Hybrid System could run on electricity up to 100 kilometers per hour, a higher speed can the electric motor. Thanks to the conventional automatic transmission behind the CVT retrieves the LC 500h up to 140 kilometers per hour without the need for the internal combustion engine when turn on. Now was the battery pack not so large that you long time electrical wiring can be cruising on the highway, but it can be done.
The system has also disadvantages? Yes, in the form of extra weight. Yet, this Multi Stage Hybrid powertrain is not more than Lexus’ Hybrid System. The extra weight to have the engineers return to afgesnoept of the batteries, which are now lithium-ion batteries instead of nickel-metaalhydrideaccu. Also the generator which is driven by the internal combustion engine, and electricity can deliver, they have in Japan a little lighter. And so they know at Lexus this is one downside to nullify and they have all in all a clever piece of engineering on the road. May this be a small comfort for missing out on the V8…
