In a time when Volkswagen was only known as massabouwer of the Beetle and the Transporter, came to Wilhelm Karmann in 1953 with the idea for the Ghia. Just out of the blue. Volkswagen decided something crazy to do and took the car in production. Time to find a spotoverzicht back on 60 years of Ghiagedoe.
Carrozzeria Ghia
The form of the sleek coupe was designed by the Italian Carrozzeria Ghia, and the technique did Wilhelm Karmann appeal to the Beetle. There was a pretty fine Beetle variant, and then the car at the Salon of Paris in ’53, was shown seems Volkswagen boss Heinrich Nordhoff so impressed to have been that he but one thing it could do: the Karmann Ghia in production. (The fact that Karmann from 1949 cabrioversies of the Beetle made, there will undoubtedly have contributed, but still.)
Hundreds of thousands of Ghia’s
After some adjustments to the exterior and changes in the interior of the car, internally referred to as Type 14, in 1955 and in production, followed by a cabrioversie in 1957. The production ran through until 1974 and at that time, were there in the Osnabrück factory 362.601 compartments and 80.881 convertibles made. Mighty lot, but, of course, a pittance compared with the numbers of the Beetle. Logical. Also, there were between four versions made: the Type 34, which is 8 years remained in production but due to its pricing – almost as expensive as a Porsche 356 – never the most popular variant.
