Recently there was a BMW 507 sold for a whopping 1.5 million euros! Time to get to know more about this beautiful roadster.
The idea for the 507 originally came from the American car importer Max Hoffman, he took the management of BMW in 1954 about a roadsterversie of the BMW 501 and 502 sedans. BMW wanted this car to the hole to fill between the cheaper sports cars like MG and Triumph, and the more expensive Mercedes-Benz 300SL.
In 1955, the BMW 507 presented on the Frankfurt auto show. The car was based on the technology of the 3.2-litre BMW 502, but with more power. The frame was taken from the BMW 503, but something shorter.
The BMW 507 Roadster was hand made, primarily of aluminum. The production took place from 1957 to 1959. A 3.2-liter V8 with 150 hp (the first industrial construction aluminum motor-provides the drive, the rear wheels of course. Later models had 15 hp extra, the power is 165 hp. This was achieved by larger valves. The top speed is officially 205 km/h (127 mph), but by the engine more rpm to make it run, there could be seemingly a speed of 220 km/h can be achieved. It was the first volumemodel’ from BMW that the magic barrier of 200 km/h passed. The 507 accelerates to 100 km/h in about 10 seconds. The weight is 1220 pounds.
Recently, I was a bit of a drive in a BMW 507, a fantastic experience. As with all older cars is to get used to the hard work, such as enable and send, but the car is amazingly smooth. And the sound.. WOW! The V8 revs to create is an addiction. It is also strange to realize that this car was not a success.
That was mainly due to the price. The 507 was Germany translated to $5000,- is going to cost but due to high cost of production the price was increased to $9000, and in the end, the 507 even in the sale for $10.500,-. This amount people paid for a 300SL, and was therefore the sale. Like I said, the car was mainly aimed at the American market. BMW wanted 2,000 copies sell, but that number was not achieved. There were only 39 units sold in the US, one for Elvis Presley. The total sales remained stuck at the 252 copies (plus 2 prototypes), what the 507 is a very rare car.
This flop made it apparent that BMW almost went bankrupt, but that is now no more a problem. BMW runs beautiful figures, and the 507 is nowadays one of the gems of the brand. Almost all of the 507’s are still in running condition, though many are in the hands of celebs and wealthy lovers. Probably also a very good investment, because the asking prices for this model will continue to rise. In 2007, the sale of Bernie Ecclestone are 507 for 430.238 British pounds (904.000 dollar), in march 2014, a 507 sold for 2.4 million dollars (1.5 million euros).
And yes, the design of the BMW Z8 is based on the 507.
