Is less really more? That we ask ourselves when we are with the Porsche 964 Speedster.
The Porsche 911 generation 964 in 1989 was introduced, but in the same year came also the 930 Speedster on the market. A car that was reminiscent of the 356 Speedster from the 50’s, the first really successful sports car that Porsche sold. Lovers, however, were of the opinion that this car (which was based on the Porsche 911 (930) Turbo) too heavy to be really nice to be able to send. Therefore, we have decided Porsche in 1993, the 964 Speedster on the market. This was based on the 964 Carrera 2 chassis, that’s lighter and more maneuverable.
The 964 Speedster is an open sports car with a roof for absolute emergencies, but prefer to use not. Further, the Speedster features a lower, schuinere windshield. A lot of luxury that comes as standard was on a 911 Cabrio in that time, it was not standard on the 964 delivered. Such things as air conditioning, on-board computer and a stereo were on the list of options, electric windows were standard. The Speedster was available in standard version and in lightweight Clubsport version.
There were a lot of similarities with the Porsche 964 RS, like the spartan interior (electric windows, disregarded). Also the limited slip differential of the 964 RS was available, but the chassis was softer than that of the RS.
The six-cylinder boxer engine was good for 250 hp and 310 Nm of torque. This allowed a top speed of 260 kilometers per hour can be achieved, and it was a sprint to 100 in 5.7 seconds is feasible. The 964 Speedster weighs 1350 kilograms. That makes that 250 hp is actually more than enough to be fun to have, especially in the Netherlands. This Speedster is damage-free, matching numbers, has only 8.787 kilometres on the clock and has recently had a full check at Porsche of Groningen. The price for this beauty is €225.000 euro, or €186.000 euros if you are in the fortunate situation in which the VAT can deduct.
