Lions ’found’ in Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA –

Biologists have lions found in a park in northwest Ethiopia along the border with Sudan. The consensus was that the lions have long ago become extinct in this part of Africa, as a result of hunting and the encroachment of ’civilization’.

The lions live in and around the Alatash National Park, report researchers from the University of British Oxford after an expedition to the area. Probably live there a lot of lions across the border in Sudan’s Dinder National Park. Since there are few prey animals in the area of life, it is the relative population is rather low. The researchers estimate that there are only one to two lions living in an area of 100 square kilometers. Because the total area is about 10,000 square kilometers, the researchers out of a total population of 100 to 200 lions.

The next step is to engage in dialogue with the Ethiopian and Sudanese authorities, to ensure that the lions are protected. That is desperately needed, because the population of lions in the whole of Africa since 1980 with 50 percent to 75 percent has decreased, according to conservation organisation
Born Free.

Below, the overall habitat of the lions.
