Kijk hoe een Jeep op afstand wordt gehackt
Driving. On the highway. With someone in it.

What you now see is one of the biggest fears that a carmaker has. A hack that only exist in the darkest nightmares of engineers. Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek, two security researchers, have a security vulnerability uncovered in the system of Fiat Chrysler. This was according to Wired as possible at a distance to virtually everything in the car to operate. Of the air conditioning, wipers, radio to turn it on and off of the brakes. Even the engine from a distance kill was possible.

The hackers got access to all of these systems via Uconnect, a system that has an internet connection with the car. With the IP address of the car on the bag, they could remotely access the systems and the firmware to adapt, which they then all systems could manage. How? They will tell you only at the upcoming Black Hat conference, where a part of the exploit will be published.

The gentlemen have the hack nine months ago and their findings neatly with Fiat Chrysler shared. That has then new software is written, and on 16 July released an update. Small disadvantage: this software can’t be over-the-air to be installed. Cars of Fiat Chrysler must pass from the dealer, or owners should work with a USB-stick.

Which cars of the Fiat Chrysler group were vulnerable to the hack is not known. Or well, yes: in fact, all of the model years 2013, 2014 and 2015 with Uconnect on board. In a response to Wired late Fiat Chrysler know that they have the research to appreciate, but prefer not to have that there is something about being published. Miller decided to do so. They want to peerreviews, and in addition, they find that ‘the public’ need to know:

“If consumers don’t realize this is an issue, they should, and they should start complaining to carmakers. This might be the child or software bug most likely to kill someone.”
