This time we will tell you about the invention of the scientist from the German Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The researcher developed a special headdress that will allow blind people to navigate in space using haptic effects. The device is called Proximity Hat.
The idea of creating such a gadget came up with the German researcher Florian Braun for a long time. What if the headdress will put pressure on the person’s head is on the other side, which is an obstacle that he may face? The scientist has developed and assembled a fully working prototype of the device. Smart cap is equipped with six ultrasonic units, each of which produces 50 measurements of the distance to surrounding objects per second. The range of modules varies from a few centimeters to several meters.
As soon as the sensor sees an object in its path, it puts gentle pressure on the head of the man on the other side, in which the object is located. The closer the object is, the stronger the pressure, allowing the user to imagine about its position in space relative to various surfaces and objects. In fact, a blind person can sense the direction and distance using only the tactile touch of the hat.
The convenience of such a system is undeniable, as it leaves the other senses, such as hearing, unoccupied, and human hands remain completely free, allowing him to do them anything. The inventor sees the use of its devices not only in the above mentioned field.
