And we are talking not only about Formula 1. Especially not really, because in 1996 found the most of the spectacle not in the king’s class.
With colleague and autosportliefhebber @mauritsh it is good to discuss, for example, the glory days of Formula 1, the most brilliant inventions of Frank Williams and his people, or the most beautiful cars ever at a DTM race at the start were. That yelled at me the question: what year was now the most beautiful autosportjaar?
Now, after the study of the history of several important raceklasses and this next to each other, seems to be one year out for me to cross: 1996. Of course, there are for each championship, one or more peak value point, but in 1996 there was the most delicious mix between action, big names and beautiful cars. I find then, the substantiation you can read below. If you think about it, then I’d love to hear via the comments!
World Rally Championship
The WRC-season was admittedly out of only nine rallies, where for the last few years often thirteen are, but the starting field was fantastic. In ’96 went the long battle between Tommi Mäkinen in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo III, Colin McRae in a Subaru Imprezza 555 and Carlos Sainz in a Ford Escorting RS Cosworth. Toyota came in 1996, slightly less, though the in Castrol livery put Celica GT-Four ST205 and the later in the season, used Celica Turbo 4WD ST185 no less tasty. Mäkinen was ultimately the best driver, but Subaru did with the Impreza 555 the most points at each other to gather for the constucteursklassement.

Deutsche Tourwagen Meisterschaft
Although the DTM since 1984, the championship between 1996 and 2000, not held. The DTM from 2000 was a very different championship than the year that this article is central. Were the cars in 1996 is still true tourwagens, derivatives of street-legal car’s so, there were, in 2000, only silhouette-racers at the start; the cars that are visually what weghebben of production models, but under the surface, no screw, parts with the same models of production. The fun season in 1996 was that there was not only German cars at the start were. The Opel Calibra V6 4×4 and the Mercedes C-Class AMG got competition from the beautiful Alfa Romeo 155 V6 TI. Knew the Italians in 1993, the race to tackle with the 155, in 1996, it was Manuel Reuter in 1996 Team Joest Racing Opel in the championship helped. Not that he had the most victories had by the way, Alessandro Nannini (Alfa Romeo) and Bernd Schneider (Mercedes-AMG) scored both more victory, but also knew less often the black-and-white checkered.

Formula 1
1996 was the year of the transfer: Michael Schumacher moved from Benetton to Scuderia Ferrari. Locks the tifosi MSC after obtaining the title in 2000, final in their heart, in 1996, had the Italians have nothing of the young German. Damon Hill finally won the championship in the magnificent Williams-Renault FW18 in Rothmans livery, for Villeneuve in the other Williams and Michael Schumacher in the Ferrari F310, with its distinctive sidepods. Other known names for that year, at the start appeared were Jean Alesi, Mika Häkkinen, Gerhard Berger, David Coulthard, Rubens Barrichello, Johnny Herbert, and of course Jos Verstappen. That last had, incidentally, a not very successful year in his Footwork-Hart FA17: of the sixteen races, he knew there were only four of us to drive.

British Touring Car Championship
Perhaps the most fun racing series from 1996 was the BTCC. Not so much because of the speed, the tourwagens in the DTM were significantly faster, but especially because of the diversity and the type of cars. Were the 155, C-Class and Calibra from the German championship dope racers, the cars from the BTCC seemed to speaking on your own car or that of your pa. No less than eleven different cars were there at the start: Volvo 850 to the Renault Laguna and Audi A4 to the Nissan Primera. No widebody’s, only considerably reduced, and with jetsers of achterspoilers. Of the twenty-five drivers that year to be at the start, there are only 7 not British, including the Dutchman, Peter Kox and Audi driver Frank Biela, who eventually champion.

24 Hours of Le Mans
Just like last year, was in 1996, Porsche is the strongest with the TWR Porsce WSC-95. The special story behind this Porsche that when Jaguar started, we did recently, out of the cloths. The field was further filled with truly the best sports cars you can imagine. Think of the Porsche 911 GT1, McLaren F1 GTR, Porsche 993 GT2, Nissan Skyline GT-R LM, Honda NSX, Ferrari F40 LM, Ferrari F333 SP, Callaway Corvette, Chrysler Viper GTS-R, Toyota Supra LM, Lister Storm GTS and a converted Toyota MR2 with amidships loaded V8… Well, my point is clear!
