Ford Ecoboost
And so they do that.

In Detroit shows Ford with a concept of its own 1.0-litre Ecoboost engine. The block is now able to be on two cylinders, resulting in a more economical consumption. The concept is a year in development at Ford. According to the carmaker weighs this new engine 15.5% less than the other/current Ecoboost engines.

Total weight of the block even 40% less (14kg) than the 1.0 three-cylinder that Ford now supplies. This result is, amongst others, the cylinder head is partly made of carbon. You can still have a cool story to hang in the pub.

Ford will be the new technology of this concept is going to apply in the next generation of Ecoboost engines. Ford-techneutbaas Andreas Meager stressed that Ford has no engines will make that on less than three cylinders running. Cilinderuitschakeling is however not a problem, thus Meager. (via autocar)
