Poland argue for a free media

In many Polish towns and cities have Saturday tens of thousands of people demonstrated against a new controversial media law by the conservative government. The Friday the in force law stipulates that key positions in the public service broadcasting adopted by the government can be appointed.

On the same day, there were new television and radiobonzen appointed and several senior editors fired. Monday will also be new directors of the public broadcaster are appointed.

In Warsaw gathered an estimated 5000 protesters. With slogans like ‘Hands off the radio” and “The government is lying’, they demanded the repeal of the law. Demonstrators compared the strong man of the conservative-nationalist government of Jaroslaw Kaczynski with Russian president Vladimir Putin.

To the demonstrations was called by the Committee for the defense of democracy, in december, even though tens of thousands of opponents of the ruling National Conservatives had mobilized.
