Hard to love video games, if you’re deprived of one of the most important external senses — vision. But for especially motivated people, even that is not a hindrance. This man is Terry Garrett, who lost his sight at the age of ten. He set a goal to learn to play video games, focusing solely on the sound. Gradually developing his own technique and having gained enough experience, he decided to go to one of the longest journeys in my life. Five years it took him to complete the game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Just imagine that you have to beat the game without looking at the screen and listening only to the sounds that generates the game world. Terry began his training in the two-dimensional games like Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, and then in 2011 decided on a personal feat and began to pass one of the best games in the series The Legend of Zelda – Ocarina of Time for Nintendo 64. Many people in his place very quickly gave up. But Terry, being a man of hard, brought it started to end, though it took him to the five years.
Of course, when you play blindly, you often have to die in the game. To speed up the process of revival, Terry used the emulator for a Nintendo 64 with the instant saving. Left and right he placed two small speaker to the stereo to understand where it is located relative to enemies and other objects that are the source of the sound. So, by trial and error, he literally centimeters explored the game world, solve puzzles, slaying enemies and defeated bosses. He had been assisted by numerous Internet users who are so imbued with respect for his tenacity, that just couldn’t stay away. Some gave him valuable advice and tips, while others are just rooting for Terry in the passing, as a blind gamer regularly published record gameplay in YouTube. Complete walkthrough you can see on his personal channel.
“It took me a very long time, but finally I reached the given goals. Who knows what I’ll do now. Thanks to those people who have been through this ordeal with me and has not left me, even when it seemed that I was about to give up and throw the pass,” said Terry after he finished his five-year project.
Well, we can only admire the tenacity of this man and once again make sure there in our life nothing is impossible. It would be a desire and belief in yourself. We wish Terry every success in his future projects. Who knows what he’ll decide to surprise their fans now.
