Researchers from Indiana University have managed to create biomassto, which acts as an effective catalyst in the production of hydrogen from water. Scientists say that this discovery greatly helped us to obtain cheap hydrogen gas from water.
The substance, called P22-Hyd, uses hydrogenase as enzyme. Hydrogenase was enclosed in a capsid (protein shell) from the bacteriophage P22, which results in its efficiency increased 150 times. It is produced during fermentation at room temperature two genes widespread Escherichia coli.
P22-Hyd is a very cheap and environmentally friendly to manufacture. Currently, in most concepts cars on hydrogen fuel for hydrogen generation uses expensive platinum. The new substance is not only comparable with platinum in efficiency, but also is renewable.
