Today there are more than 200 different sports in the world, and their number is constantly growing. For example, in 2023, physical sport was recognized as an official sport – within its framework, people first compete in the virtual space inside a computer game, and then compete in a real analogue. For example, at the first stage, a team of players tries their hand at the FIFA computer game, and then they play real football. We are taught from childhood that sport has health benefits. But many sports, especially if played professionally, can cause irreparable harm to health.
We offer you a list of five popular sports that, on the one hand, are beneficial, but on the other, can have a negative effect on a person’s physical condition.

What injuries do football players get?
Nobody knows when football was invented. But archaeological finds suggest that ball games existed in ancient Egypt and were known in many other countries. The first official football match was played in 1872 between Scotland and England.
Football is a great sport that improves human health through cardio exercise. When running, athletes train their hearts, improve their blood circulation, and strengthen their blood vessels. Football also develops spatial thinking, because players constantly need to navigate the vast space of the football field. In general, football is good for both the body and the mind.
But, unfortunately, at the same time, football is an extremely traumatic sport. Professional football players always risk suffering from torn ligaments in their legs. Sometimes players get serious injuries from a sharp turn or a light blow to the legs.
In one match, football players run a distance of 8 to 12 kilometers. So to play football, you need an extremely athletic physique, high endurance and developed strategic thinking. But sometimes football players get more harm than good from this wonderful sport.

The dangers of weightlifting
Another popular sport that destroys the human body is weightlifting. During competitions, weightlifters lift heavy barbells over their heads, which looks impressive, but brings practically no health benefits.
It is well known that strength training helps muscles grow and also increases bone density. Thanks to this, weightlifters are very strong and have a minimal risk of bone fractures.
But that's where the benefits of weightlifting end. Due to constant weight lifting (sometimes athletes lift barbells weighing more than 300 kilograms!), people's intervertebral discs are destroyed, nerves are pinched, and hernias develop. Weightlifters also risk their knees, shoulders, and elbows, which are subjected to very heavy loads. In general, people who have succeeded in weightlifting do not feel very well in old age.

Is there any benefit from boxing
Many people believe that boxing is useless – athletes just hit each other and get seriously injured. In fact, boxing strengthens muscles, trains the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, teaches self-defense and increases self-confidence.
But opponents of boxing are partly right, because almost no professional fight goes by without injuries. Any significant blow to the head leads to a shake of the brain. Even at first, beginner athletes cannot avoid abrasions and bruises. And in professional sports, concussions are common. In the long term, these injuries can lead to problems with memory and thinking.

The benefits and harms of running
It would seem, what could be bad about running? Regular running increases a person's endurance, improves the cardiovascular system and develops leg muscles. Consequently, runners have healthy blood vessels and suffer less from heart disease. When a person runs for several hours in a row, he experiences runner's euphoria – they say that this is something incredible, indescribable in simple words.
However, constant stress on the legs causes inflammation of the cartilage tissue. Also, when running, a person's feet suffer, which sometimes leads to inflammation of the Achilles tendon. If a person starts running abruptly, without prior training, the risk of serious injury increases many times over. So this seemingly simple sport should be treated with extreme caution.

The danger of skiing
The list of the most traumatic sports includes alpine skiing and snowboarding. Of course, they provoke a surge of adrenaline, develop endurance and muscles, and also give a sea of bright emotions.
However, sharp turns and swings of poles cause severe knee and shoulder damage. Often, athletes and especially amateurs suffer from ligament ruptures. Sometimes this happens even when moving at low speed, and people need emergency medical care.
Snowboarders, especially at first, break their wrists and end up in the hospital with a concussion. Unfortunately, in some cases they get spinal injuries, which can lead to disability.
