If you sit at the computer for a long time, you need to drink coffee

Modern life is such that many people have to lead a sedentary lifestyle — We sit in transport, at work or study, and then sit and spend time at home in front of the computer or TV. Sitting for long periods of time during the day can not only negatively affect your health, but can also significantly shorten your lifespan. However, according to the results of a recent study, the negative consequences of a sedentary lifestyle can be eliminated, and not at all by sports, as many might think, but by drinking coffee. Moreover, the positive effect of this drink turned out to be quite significant.

Coffee prolongs life

A sedentary lifestyle leads to the formation of blood clots and the development of other health problems such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, etc. As a result, a person may die prematurely, for example, due to a blood clot. One study found that if a person sits for 11 hours a day, their risk of death increases by almost 60%.

Many people try to compensate for prolonged sitting with periodic physical activity. However, as previous studies have shown, exercise, although beneficial for health, cannot fully protect the body from the negative consequences of a sedentary lifestyle.

At the same time, it has long been known that coffee has various beneficial properties. Therefore, Chinese scientists from Soochow University decided to check whether this drink is able to counteract the increased risk of death associated with a sedentary lifestyle. To do this, they analyzed data from more than 10 thousand people in the United States.

According to the study published in the journal BMC Public Health, all people who spent more than eight hours a day sitting had an increased risk of death from various diseases, including cardiovascular problems. But the most interesting thing is that this did not apply to people who drank coffee daily, that is, they did not have an increased risk of death compared to people who sat for less than four hours during the day.

The results of the analysis showed that even after 13 years of a sedentary lifestyle, coffee consumption reduces the risk of death by 1.58 times. Drinking coffee essentially eliminates the link between a sedentary lifestyle and an increased risk of death.

Why coffee reduces your risk of death

People who were sedentary but also drank coffee every day had a reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease, regardless of how many cups they drank, researchers report. They drank the drink. If people drank at least two and a half cups of coffee a day, they had a reduced risk of dying from any disease, compared with people who drank no coffee at all and sat for at least six hours a day.

As mentioned above, the positive properties of coffee have been known for a long time. For example, one study found that drinking coffee leads to a longer, healthier life overall. In addition, scientists also found that caffeine reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In addition, caffeine protects the brain from Parkinson's disease and helps it stay healthy as you age.

But the benefits of coffee come from more than just caffeine. The drink itself is rich in antioxidants, which reduce inflammation and speed up metabolism. Another study that was published earlier this year found that coffee drinkers with colorectal cancer were 32% less likely to have a recurrence if they drank at least five cups of the drink per day. The same study says that consuming this amount of coffee reduces mortality from all causes.

Unfortunately, the current study only showed statistics, but says nothing about how exactly the drink reduces the risk of death. Coffee is a complex compound, so it is quite possible that the positive effect is associated not only with caffeine, but with several substances at once.

Additional research will be needed to determine the exact reason for such health benefits. Perhaps scientists will be able to determine the optimal dose of coffee or even create a drug based on it that can be taken by all people leading a sedentary lifestyle. In the meantime, people who spend a lot of time sitting, for example at the computer, should not deny themselves coffee, unless, of course, there are individual contraindications to this drink.
