Why is hot water turned off in Russia in the summer, but not in other countries?

Every summer, residents of Russia have to survive without hot water. The morning hours turn into an ordeal in which you need to heat water in a kettle, pour it into a basin, dilute it with cold water, and so on – and all this is needed just to wash your hair. Only residents of the post-Soviet space face such problems; in other countries no one even knows about the planned shutdown of hot water. Everyone has the opportunity to wash themselves thoroughly under warm water, which is especially important in the summer heat, when the body gets dirty most often. Perhaps while washing with a basin, you had a question: why is the hot water turned off every year? Is it really impossible to repair pipelines once and for all?

Hot water shutdown schedule

Scheduled shutdown of hot water occurs every year, from May to September. In each city, the hot water shutdown schedule is different, usually it lasts no longer than two weeks. In large cities, the schedule depends on the street; you can always view this information on the Internet.

Why do they turn off hot water in the summer

The most important reason for turning off hot water in the summer is carrying out scheduled maintenance work. Simply put, workers check that all water pipes are intact and ready for the next heating season.

In Russia, the hot water supply system is combined with the heating system. Testing of pipelines can be carried out only after the heat in the houses has been turned off, that is, in the summer. When hot water is turned off, workers carry out hydraulic tests – they need to make sure that during the next heating season the pipes will withstand the load placed on them. If tests are not carried out in the summer, pipes may burst in winter, and people risk being left without heat in 30-degree frosts.

If problems are found during testing, the pipes have to be repaired. This may increase the hot water shutdown time. But it’s better to detect problems in the summer, when it’s already warm everywhere, than in the winter, when people are trying to keep warm anyway.

Why don't they turn off the cold water in the summer

Usually in the summer they turn off only the hot water, and leave the cold water alone. And this is just great, because it is needed for everyday needs: washing, drinking, cooking, and so on. If workers need to turn off cold water, this does not last long – otherwise, it would cause great inconvenience to the population.

In addition, the cold water supply system is not subject to such a high load as the hot water system. The fact is that hot water destroys pipes much faster than cold water. Also, cold water is used constantly and in large volumes, and hot water flows unevenly – sometimes the pipes experience peak loads.

It should also be taken into account that the temperature and pressure in hot water pipes are very high, which makes repairs impossible without shutting down. In case of problems with cold water, sometimes they can be solved without turning off the common tap.

< h2>Disconnection of hot water in other countries

Residents of post-Soviet countries mainly experience hot water shutdowns in the summer. People from other parts of the planet do not even know about the existence of such a problem.

This is due to the fact that in many other countries there is no centralized supply of hot water. Only cold water is supplied to the homes of foreigners, and all heating devices are installed separately: we are talking about boilers, individual boiler rooms in each house, and so on. If repairs are necessary, workers redirect water through spare pipelines.

In Scandinavian countries and Canada, hot water is also connected to the heating network. But residents rarely suffer from hot water outages because they have spare water heating devices in their homes. However, in Russia, the popularity of gas water heaters and other similar equipment is also growing.

In general, living conditions in different countries are different. In the USA, everything is very bad in the field of medicine – of course, they treat people well, but it is terribly expensive. But at the same time, many roads abroad are made of concrete, rather than ordinary asphalt. Also, many other countries have high-speed elevators, while in Russia they are ordinary. There are reasons for all this.
