Scientists have created a new method for obtaining three-dimensional images of objects

BWithout harming the object A group of scientists from the University of Barcelona and Sensofar Tech presented a new technology for obtaining 3D images of research samples quickly, accurately and without harming the object. The new system is capable of characterizing the three-dimensional topography of an object with high speed and spatial resolution exceeding the performance of existing technological systems.

This method is a new step in the field of optical profilometry, a technique widely used in quality control and part inspection in various business sectors, from 3D printed components to coronary prostheses and surface defect detection.

Optical profilometry is a method of measuring the three-dimensional profile of objects using light. Typically, the profile of a micrometric object is measured using a microscope, which takes a set of hundreds of images at different heights and planes of the object. However, new technology can significantly reduce the acquisition time of this collection of images.

To implement the new technology, an ultra-fast liquid lens developed by Professor Marty Duocastella, which allows scanning thousands of times per second, was used, as well as a field programmable array (FPGA) to synchronize light pulses and capture images from the camera.
