Russia has made significant progress in the fight against tuberculosis, but there are also problems

But all of them can be solved. In 2020, Russia for the first time left the list of countries with a high burden of tuberculosis, as recognized by WHO. Thus, Deputy Director for Scientific and Medical Work of the Central Research Institute of Tuberculosis, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Oksana Komissarova talked to Gazeta.Ru and shared information about this dangerous disease. In short, from 2000 to 2022, the incidence in Russia has decreased by 66%, new anti-tuberculosis drugs have appeared that can eliminate mycobacterium tuberculosis, and surgical treatment methods are used for extensive damage to lung tissue. In addition, treatment for MDR tuberculosis has been reduced from 18-24 months to 9-12 months.

True, there are also problems. Russia ranks third in the world after India and China in terms of the prevalence of drug-resistant tuberculosis. In 2022, 31.5% of new cases and 56.9% of all cases were MDR-tuberculosis, and in 2021-2022, an increase in incidence and mortality from tuberculosis was observed in 16 regions of Russia.

Prevention? Desirable. Thus, BCG vaccination prevents the development of fatal forms of tuberculosis, although it cannot prevent the development of drug-resistant tuberculosis.

Fortunately, new vaccines are being developed that will be more effective.
