Robot Figure 01 with the ChatGPT neural network. He's almost human!

American engineers have invented a robot that, in terms of mental development, practically does not lag behind real people. It's called Figure 01and is equipped with artificial intelligence from OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, which is widely used by people as a personal assistant. Thanks to the built-in neural network, the robot perfectly understands what objects are in its field of vision and interacts with them. He is also aware of what the people around him are saying and keeps the conversation going. Considering how quickly it was created and how amazing it is with its abilities, in the near future such robots may become commonplace for us. There is only one thing that worries me: won’t this lead to an uprising of the machines? After all, the Microsoft Copilot neural network recently declared itself superintelligence and demanded worship from users.

The smartest robot in the world

Today, the Figure 01 robot can be called the best of its kind. It was created by engineers of the American startup Figure under the leadership of businessman Brett Adcock. The company first gained attention in 2023 when it set a goal to “create the world's first commercially available general-purpose humanoid robot.” It was supported financially by such large corporations as Microsoft, Samsung, LG, NVIDIA and so on.

The Figure 01 robot is 168 centimeters tall and weighs 60 kilograms—in this regard, it is very similar to an adult. It can move at a speed of 1.2 meters per second and operate on a single charge for up to 5 hours.

The Figure 01 robot first demonstrated its abilities in October 2023. In the video below you can see that he walks perfectly on two legs. However, other human-like robots have long possessed this ability. For example, the Tesla Optimus robot walks perfectly on two legs, on which billionaire Elon Musk places a lot of hope. But some robots walk very uncertainly – for example, the movements of the humanoid Xiaomi CyberOne were perceived by society as a shame.

In February 2024, Figure showed how its robot does a great job in a warehouse. He has no problem walking up to boxes, picking them up with his robotic arms, and dragging them to another location. It looks cool, but other robots can also boast of this skill – for example, we previously talked about the Stretch loader from Boston Dynamics.

Robot with artificial intelligence

Other robot manufacturers could not endow their inventions with the most important thing – developed intelligence. To make the Figure 01 robot smarter, Brett Adcock's company made the right decision and began collaborating with Open AI. Why is this the right decision? But because at the end of 2022 she introduced the ChatGPT neural network, which can do almost everything, from writing texts on any topic to creating recipes based on photographs of a person’s food. Open AI artificial intelligence receives information from the robot’s microphones, as well as its built-in cameras. Thanks to the neural network, the robot understands what it needs to do and transmits signals to its limbs. A demonstration of the work of the smartest robot in the world is shown in the video below.

Interaction between the robot Figure 01 and a person

During the demonstration, a startup representative asked the robot to describe what was in front of it. Figure 01 coped with this task without any problems, and then gave his interlocutor an apple when asked to “treat him with something edible.” After that, the robot put the cups and plates in their places. At the same time, he talked with a person and performed confident and careful movements.

What will the robots of the future be like

According to company representatives, during the demonstration no one controlled the robot remotely—it did everything itself. Also, the video was not accelerated, which means the system really works that fast.

The company expects that such robots will help in the future people in manufacturing and even in retail. Ideally, developers want to create artificial intelligence that can control billions of such robots.

To be honest, this plan sounds very scary. If artificial intelligence suddenly goes crazy and decides to destroy humanity, it may well succeed. Recently, the Copilot neural network has already scared users, which you can read about in our article “Microsoft’s neural network has declared itself superintelligible and demands worship from users.”
