The “skating rink” of the new law will hit Apple to a greater extent. The EU law on digital services (Digital Markets Act, DMA) that has entered into force will most likely contribute to increased and expanded competition between Apple and Google. DMA assumes increased competition both between large market players, the world's main tech giants, and between these corporations and small companies. The law affects 22 services of Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, which owns TikTok, Microsoft and Meta Platforms*.
Specifically, Apple is required to notify users about alternative payment methods in applications, as well as allow other developers to open their application stores. According to Zach Meyers, associate director of the Center for European Reform, the DMA “goes to the heart of Apple's philosophy, its approach to security and its business model.”
So Apple and Google will compete with renewed vigor and on a larger scale . Because Alphabet, the parent company of Google, will not “suffer” much due to the adoption of the new law. But Apple will have to literally get out in order to retain the European market.
