The study showed that there is a strange disorder called aphantasy. A person with this disorder does not have the ability to consciously create images in front of the “mind's eye”. As it turned out, this is noticeable even in his appearance, namely in his eyes. Researchers from Australia tested two groups of people. The first had 42 participants with a normal perception of reality, and the second had 18 people with aphantasy. They were all asked to view images with dark and light figures on a gray background. People in both groups showed the usual pupil dilation response to both bright and dark images.
But then the researchers asked participants in both groups to imagine the same images with their eyes open. They found that the pupils of people with normal visual imagination constrict and dilate with recollection, while the pupils of people with aphantasy do not change size.
